Lesson 1: Timeline

Subject Area: Social Studies and Math

Grade/Group: GGrade 6 or 7; Heterogeneous group to include students of all readiness levels.

Time Frame: 3, 45 - minute classes

Objectives: The students will be able to:
  • Identify world events in the time period of 1900's to present.
  • Identify events specific to Aquidneck Island during the same time period.
  • Organize dates and events in chronological order.
Materials: Learner Factors:

Samples and models will be provided to the class. The use of the overhead will be beneficial to all visual learners. All directions will be provided orally and in print. Students of a higher readiness level will be asked to incorporate 10 world events and 15 Aquidneck Island events and provide the correct date. Students of a lower readiness level may be given the events and asked to provide just the date and order them chronologically. Another variation may be to provide the Aquidneck Island events only and the student will need to determine the world events and the years. These students may be asked to incorporate 7 world events and 10 Aquidneck Island events.

Motivational Activity:

Students will activate their prior knowledge by completing the anticipation guide which will be followed by a teacher facilitated class dialog. Events that have occurred in the world and locally will be shared both orally and visually, followed by discussion.

Lesson Development:
  1. Activate schema through the use of the anticipation guide, articles (gathered by teacher and class through research) and discussion.
  2. Ability level fact worksheet will be distributed and modeled using the overhead.
  3. Students complete the activity individually or in small groups.
  4. Events will be categorized into two columns: Aquidneck Island and World.
  5. All events will be placed in chronological order
  6. Using the criteria sheet an individual timeline will be created to include both world and island events.
Closure:

Once students have completed the individual timelines, a life-size classroom timeline mural will be generated from all ability levels and groups based on their individual timelines.

After the timeline has been labeled by the class along with teacher assistance, each student will be asked to select one event to illustrate and/or summarize. These illustrations and summaries will be included on the life-size timeline.

* This timeline will remain hanging in the room throughout the unit. It will become an added resource in future lessons.*

Follow Up/Tie In:

This lesson will be followed by lesson 2 and is the first in a series of 8.

Student Assessment:

A checklist and/or rubric can be used to assess individual timelines. Verbal explanations of chosen event illustration/summaries will be assessed through teacher observation prior to hanging on the class timeline.
