Lesson 3: Photographic History - Then and Now

Subject: Art, Social Studies, and Language Arts

Time Frame: 2,45-minute blocks

Objectives: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the skill 'compare and contrast'. They will:
  • Record the changes affecting Aquidneck Island, from 'yesterday' to 'today' in a graphic organizer.
  • Write an explanation describing the similarities and differences between photos of Aquidneck Island over time.
  • Predict an appropriate future change on a photo of Aquidneck Island.
Materials: Learning Factors:

According to readiness level:
  • Students will view a 3-5 photo series, record important information on a graphic organizer, and write a 2 paragraph essay, comparing and contrasting each historical site.
  • Students will view a 3-5 photo series, record important information on a graphic organizer, and write 3 descriptive sentences about each picture.
  • Students will view a 2 photo series, record important information on a graphic organizer, and write 2-3 descriptive sentences about each picture.
Motivational Activity:

Select a recent change that is of high interest to the majority of students. Share the changes that occurred as a whole group. Record the changes so students can feel connected to the content and refer back to the information during the lesson.

Lesson Development:
  1. Motivation activity
  2. Share each photograph one at a time for all students to view.
  3. Select one series of photos to model with students so they know how to use the graphic organizer.
  4. Distribute photos, Newport, Then and Now, and graphic organizer.
  5. Complete graphic organizer - Venn diagram.
  6. All students will write 2-3 sentences about one set of photos.
  7. High readiness level students will use this information to write a 2 paragraph essay comparing and contrasting any two pictures in their picture series. Average to low readiness level students will write a minimum of 3 Superior Sentences discussing similarities found in pictures and 3 Superior Sentences discussing differences. Both writing assignments should reflect the reasons for the similarities and differences as evidence of change.
Closure:

Students will use their pictures to produce a bulleted list of information about the changes happening over time. They will present this information back to the class orally, using their list for a visual aide.

Follow Up:

Students will illustrate and support what they think their 'spot' will look like in 20 years. They must produce a minimum of 3 reasons why, a picture and caption. High readiness level students should add this element to their 2 paragraph essay, demonstrating change over time and predictions about the future.

Student Assessment:
  • Graphic organizer
  • Observation of oral presentation
  • Checklist for bulleted information
  • Rubric to assess writing sample
