HELIN

The McKillop Library is a member of the Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN). In addition to Salve Regina University, eight other academic libraries in Rhode Island belong to this consortium: Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, University of Rhode Island, Brown University, Bryant College, Community College of Rhode Island, Wheaton College, and Johnson ∓ Wales University. HELIN libraries share an automated library system that includes an online catalog. What does HELIN mean to you? Access to over four million books with just a click! If the McKillop Library doesn't have what you are looking for and another HELIN library does, have it delivered to you at Salve with just a click of the "HELIN Request" button. Simply enter your name and library barcode and you'll have it in 2 business days!

JOURNALS

We subscribe to over 700 periodicals in print and provide access to thousands of electronic full-text journals. Here you will find the professional journals and newspapers to support the academic majors of the university. The library subscribes to nearly 100 online databases that contain indexes to several thousand journals and newspapers. Some of the major databases, such as EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier, JSTOR and Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe contain the full-text of many of the indexed articles. For a current list of available journal titles, please go to http:/library.salve.edu/serials.html

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

If you are unable to locate the book you need at any of the HELIN libraries, or the journal article you need in the McKillop Library in print or in a database, you can order these materials through interlibrary loan. This can be done online from the library homepage. Click on "Request Interlibrary Loan" on the right hand side of the library homepage: http://library.salve.edu. Some interlibrary loans may take two weeks to complete.

An interlibrary loan service that is being used by some HELIN libraries is ARIEL, an innovative document transmission system. Using ARIEL, the HELIN consortium libraries are able to scan and transmit journal articles quickly and easily between libraries. As each HELIN library becomes equipped to use ARIEL, processing time for articles from journals that HELIN libraries hold will be trimmed to approximately 2-5 days. Each HELIN library has its own timetable for acquiring the scanners, software and computers to provide the ARIEL service. Look for this service to become increasingly available.

TECHNOLOGY

More than 30 computers in the library are available for research. We also have laptops for loan at the Circulation Desk for in-library use. Three collabrative workstations, for more than one student to work together, two of which have scanners. Begin at the Library homepage at http://library.salve.edu. You can search the journal article databases or scan the Internet for information. You can search from your office on campus just as if you were in the library. From off campus, an Internet connection and a current Salve ID card will allow you to access most of the electronic databases and request HELIN loans from wherever you are. You will be prompted for your name and library barcode when accessing databases from off-campus.
