How do I find out what books the library has on my topic?

Use the HELIN Online Catalog to find books located at McKillop Library and other HELIN libraries. To limit your search to books located only at McKillop Library, select "Salve Regina University" under the drop-down menu labeled "View entire collection."

A keyword search allows you to search for any term relevant to your research topic. Keyword searching simply matches your search terms to any word included in a book's catalog listing.

What is the difference between a keyword and a subject search?

While keyword searching simply matches your search terms to any word included in a book's catalog listing, a subject search must use the exact Library of Congress subject headings as they are listed in the catalog. Word order and phrasing must be very specific to exactly match these assigned subject headings. Starting with a keyword search can lead you to appropriate subject headings. Clicking on a subject heading in a book's catalog listing will take you to a list of all books with that subject heading.

I found some books in the library catalog. How do I find them on the shelf in the library?

The catalog listing for each book includes location, status, and call number information. Books located at McKillop Library have the location Salve. If a book is checked out, its status will list a due date. If a book is not checked out, its status will say available. To find a book on the shelf, use the call number. Books located in the main collection with call numbers A - G are located on the second floor, while call number H - Z are on the third floor. Books in the reference collection are located on the first floor. Note that books with the location of Salve Reference, Salve Pastore Collection, Salve CurrLib Reference, or Salve Newport Collection are for library use only and cannot be checked out.

I can't find the book on the shelf. What should I do?

Recheck the catalog to be sure that the book's location is Salve and the status is available. Then ask for assistance at the service desk, and we will help you look for the book on the shelf. If the book is still not located, fill out a lost book form at the service desk. We will attempt to locate the book and notify you. If a book cannot be found, you may request it through interlibrary loan.

I need a book that is only available at another HELIN library. How can I request it and have it sent to McKillop Library?

Books from other HELIN libraries can be requested through the HELIN catalog. Find the book you want in the library catalog. You must be in the individual record to request the item. Click the HELIN Request button (one of the blue buttons across the top of the screen). Enter your name and library barcode (the 14 digit Library number on your Salve ID.) In the box marked Choose a Pickup Location, choose Salve, or another library if you prefer to pick up your material at another location. (Hint: It does not need to be SRU. If Roger Williams University or one of the other HELIN libraries is more convenient, you can have the book shipped there.) Click the box marked Submit Above Information. Directly beneath Choose one item from the list below, click the library from which you want the book. (Hint: If there is more than one option, select any book whose status is available). Click Request Selected Item. If everything has gone correctly, you should see in red letters: Your request has been sent to the library. Books requested from another HELIN library usually arrive within 48 hours, excluding weekends. Brown University Libraries have a different process for requesting books, explained below.

How do I request a book from Brown?

The InRhode Library Catalog combines the library resources of Brown University's Library Catalog, JOSIAH, with those of the HELIN Consortium's Library Catalog, HELIN. Students, faculty and staff from any of the nine HELIN libraries may request books through this catalog with a valid library barcode.

I need a book that is not available at McKillop Library or any other HELIN library. How can I get it?

To obtain a book that is not available at any HELIN library, make an interlibrary loan request. Interlibrary loans may take several weeks to arrive, so please plan ahead and and order your materials in advance. You may also want to check your local public library's online catalog (RI Public Library Catalog) to see if the book you need is available there.

I want to find a broader range of books on my topic than what is available in the HELIN catalog. Where should I look?

WorldCat is a database of millions of records describing books and other library materials from around the world. Items found in WorldCat can be requested by interlibrary loan.
