All sessions begin at the Login screen. Before you can use any of the webmail features, you must connect to your Salve account using the username assigned to you by your network administrator and the password that you have chosen.

Note: New students, faculty, and staff on server Postal form their id as follows: firstname.lastname

Password: Type in your password. It will appear as asterisks.

Server: The default is Salve.
Note: New studens, faculty and staff should use the small arrow to the right to change this field to Postal.

Log in: Click here to get started!

The Mailbox Listing

The contents of your Inbox folder will be displayed immediately upon logging in. The Mailbox listing shows the contents of each message’s header (message status (?), date sent, from, subject and size). Each column has a heading. Clicking on the heading will cause the listing to be sorted by that column.

Subject: To view the contents of a message, click on the message’s Subject. You will be taken to the message screen.

From: The From column indicates the name of the party sending the message to you. Clicking on the name will open up a Compose Window giving you the opportunity to reply to the sender without opening the message.

You can manage your mail from this screen by selecting a message by clicking on the box to its right. You can then Delete the message or Move or Copy it to a folder. These functions are located at the very top or bottom of the Mailbox Listing screen. Select the folder from the pull down menu to the right of Move/Copy buttons.

The Message Screen
The message Screen displays the contents of the selected message. From here, you can delete the current message, reply to the current message, advance to the next message in your current mailbox, save the message or add the sender to your contacts.

Save as: Click here to download your message to a disk

Print: Use your browser’s print button to print a message.

Add to Contacts: Contacts is your address book containing the names and e-mail addresses of those people to whom you send messages. There are two ways to add to your contacts. Click on Add to Contacts while a message from that person is displayed or click on Contacts along the left hand margin.

You may view or download Attachments from this screen. The computer on which you are viewing your messages must have the appropriate software to open the attachments. Word processing (Such as Microsoft Word) or a presentation application (such as PowerPoint) may be required depending on the attachment.

The Compose Window

You can send mail in a variety of ways. You might choose to compose a new message or perhaps to reply to an existing message. Whichever method you choose, however, will open the standard Compose Window. In the Compose Window, fill in the To field with the e-mail address of the person to whom you are sending the message. This is the only required field, although it is suggested that you also fill in a Subject. Type your message in the large lower field. Once you have completed entering your message, click the Send button.

CC: Send a Copy of this message to additional e-mail addresses.

Attachment: Click on the Browse button to search your computer files for the one you would like to attach to this message. Click on that file and come back to the compose window and click on Attach. After adding an attachment, wait for the Compose Window to change. It will list the attachments that have been added and allow you to delete any that you wish.

Spell Check: This function will highlight in red all of the words that the program identifies as possible spelling errors. There is no "suggested spelling" or "possible alternatives" function.

A helpful hint: Clicking on Contacts or Browse will open new windows. Once you have selected the e-mail address you will be sending the message to or the file you wish to attach, you must close that window to return to the Compose Window.

Other Helpful Hints

Bounce: To send the current message on to a new recipient but seem like it came from the original sender. You will be able to fill in only a new To: address.

Getting around: Use the small arrows on the Mailbox Listing and the Message screens to move back and forward. Using your browser’s back button may cause you to disconnect from IMP.

Printing: In whatever Internet Browser you are using (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.), the Print button may be used to print out a copy of your message.

Click on Delete and a trashcan will appear next to that message. You may Undelete after selecting the message in the same manner. Click on Empty Trash to have these messages permanently deleted.
