Searching LEXIS-NEXIS

At the search screen, enter your search terms in the required field on the form. You must enter text in each required field in order to retrieve results. You can enter a single term, a phrase, or combine terms (i.e. Cuba, Cuban refugees, Cuba and baseball, etc.) For additional help with searching, click the Tips button at the upper right-hand corner of each search form or refer to the LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe Fact Book at http://www.lexis-nexis.com/cispubs/Catalog/universe/academic%20universe/acadufactbk.pdf

Although not required, you may use the "Narrow search with additional terms" box to include more specific words to help refine your search. Do not enter "and", "or" or "and not" before the terms you key in this box.

When date searching is an option, use the pull-down list choices, or click in the "From" and "To" boxes to enter your dates. Acceptable date formats include 09/03/99; Sept 3, 1999, 09/99; September 1999; and 1999.

To search for variations of a word, use an exclamation mark (!) to replace one or more characters at the end of a word. Example: Use negligen! to search for negligent, negligently, or negligence.

Click on the "Search" button at the bottom of the screen to run your search.

If an acceptable number of documents are found, review them for relevancy. If your search retrieved an empty answer set or too many documents, you can revise the search using: "Edit Search" . Edit Search will allow you to make changes to your search by adding terms, changing the source or changing a date. Or clear the form entirely and start over. "FOCUS" will allow you to add new search terms and conduct a search within your previous results set.

Advanced Searching

The advanced searching screen is labeled "More Options".

Enter keywords and select the field where you want the words to be found. For example, search options in the "News" category include Headline, Headline and Lead Paragraph(s), Author, Full Text and Caption.

Combine your search criteria using the connectors provided.

Limit your search to a specific publication by entering the title in the "Search this publication title" field.

A user can determine if LEXIS-NEXIS includes a specific source or publication by clicking on the Sources link on any Search form. The user may browse the source list and select a title to search, and then get a comprehensive description of the source. Source lists provide detailed information at the title level, and then link to the appropriate search form. "About this title" describes each source fully, including coverage dates and frequency.

Results

Search results display as a document list. You may change this display to an Expanded list, a KWIC (Key Word In Context) or full format.

Print, download or e-mail a citation list or selected documents to yourself using Academic Universe's capabilities. The service gathers the citations of the documents you select, assembles them on a single Web page, and displays them in a screen format that is most suitable for printing. Entire documents can also be printed, downloaded or e-mailed, one at a time, in either Full or KWIC (KeyWord In Context) format.
