Internet Links for
LITERATURE & CRITICISM
Live Reference

In addition to our subject guide on Literature, there are numerous websites dedicated to Literature on the Internet. Here are some excellent gateways to Internet resources in Literature:

Major Gateways:
  • Literary Resources on the Net
Points to "sites on the Internet dealing with English and American literature, excluding single electronic texts, and is limited to collections of information useful to literary critics."

  • Online Literary Criticism Collection
"Contains 4745 critical and biographical websites about authors and their works that can be browsed by author, title, nationality and literary period."

  • Voice of the Shuttle
An index for the humanities on the Web. VOS organizes resources by academic specialties, primarily literary periods. It includes full-text sites, bibliographies, critics' and theorists' pages, discussion groups, bookstore links and some journals.

Literary Reference Sources (Online Texts):

  • A Dictionary of Literary Symbols
This is the first dictionary of symbols to be based on literature, rather than "universal" psychological archetypes, myths, or esoterica. Michael Ferber has assembled nearly two hundred entries clearly explaining and illustrating the literary symbols that we all encounter (such as swan, rose, moon, gold), along with hundreds of cross-references and quotations.

  • Gale Literary Terms
A short dictionary of literary terms and genres.

  • Glossary of Literary Theory
A dictionary of commonly used terminology used in literary analysis such as romanticism, trope, or pathetic fallacy.

  • Handbook of Rhetorical Devices
"This book contains definitions and examples of more than sixty traditional rhetorical devices" such as chiasmus, metonymy, oxymoron, etc.

  • Harvard Classics & Shelf of Fiction
"The most comprehensive and well-researched anthology of all time" comprises the 50-volume shelf of non-fiction and 20-volume shelf of fiction. Together they cover major works in literature, philosophy, religion, history and folklore.

Specific Literatures:

  • American Authors
Provides information on American authors and literary movements, a time line of literary and historical events, and links to other American literature sites on the Internet.

  • Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet
Provides a directory of scholarly resources on the Internet divided by 'Works", "Life and Times", and "Criticism".

  • French Literature - TennesseeBob's Famous French Links
Extensive index to sites about anything French: Books, literature, art, music, film, press, radio, television, history, education, travel and tourism.

  • Portuguese and Spanish Literature
The Iberian Language and Literature Web is designed to provide access to scholarly resources in Iberian language and literature.
