Course Description:

Introduces principles of information architecture, library science and information science to plan, design, develop, and evaluate cohesive web sites and intranets that are attractive, navigable, manageable, and expandable. Pre: 508 or permission of instructor.
Textbooks (Available from URI Bookstore and Amazon.com): Course Objectives:
This course is designed to introduce you to the knowledge and skills necessary to work with technology available on the WWW to provide:
  • an attractive, navigable, manageable, and expandable web site
  • access and management of e-resources provided on the WWW
  • discuss the issues of information architecture as pertainent
Course Outcomes:
    Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

    Theory of information architecture ---
  • understand the environment for information presentation and retrieval -- i.e. the Internet, WWW and other services.
  • explain fundamental issues of information presentation.
  • manage the process of developing and managing an information architecture:
    • conceptual design
    • planning
    • production
    • management
  • understand the "de facto" standards for web design and implementation.


  • Web site development ---
  • Code using the following web authoring languages: HTML, CSS, XHTML, and Javascript.
  • Manage a web storage area to maintain a website.
  • Design and implement the "de facto" standards for web site development.

Course Structure:

  • First class will meet at URI-Kingston (optional) for course orientation.
  • Readings in textbooks, academic papers, and online lectures delivered by WebCT.
  • Class discussions on researched topics using WebCT Discussion
  • Online exercises and tutorials to increase your skills.
  • Creation and maintenance of a World Wide Web site using a web-based storage and delivery system.
  • Write a research paper to be reviewed in class.
