October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the McKillop Library has a lobby exhibit as part of this effort. This exhibit was prepared in conjunction with the Women's Resource Center of Newport and Bristol Counties.

Each year, throughout the country used cell phones are collected for use in domestic violence programs. Cell phones are given to women in domestic situations so that they can summon help quickly when they are threatened The phones are completely cleared of all previous owner information then recycled-directly to women if they have a 911 function or they are sold to support domestic violence programs. The library has a drop off box for cell phones, located in the Circulation Lobby that will be recycled through the Women's Resource Center. The Social Work programs here at Salve have participated in this program the cell phone program for many years and the McKillop library is happy to provide another venue for this effort.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.
