The MSD Quintet will perform and talk about influences and
innovations in their music. For this special event, the first floor of
McKillop Library will become a jazz café.
The MSD Quintet is a contemporary jazz ensemble principally based
in Newport, RI. Consisting of keyboards, sax, trumpet / flugelhorn,
bass guitar and drums, they play sounds of Yellowjackets, Miles
Davis, The Pat Metheny Group, Michael Brecker, Steps Ahead, John
Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and other jazz greats, as well as original
compositions.
Three members of the Quintet are on the Salve Regina faculty:
Peter Davis, Professional Musician in Residence and Chair of the
Department of Music; Michael Johnson, an adjunct professor,
teaching jazz theory, piano, and small jazz ensemble; and Doug
Woolverton, also an adjunct professor, teaching trumpet performance
methods. The quintet also includes D.J. Cordeiro on drums and Jon Lavieri on tenor saxophone.
