Dr. Laura O'Toole, Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Sociology, will speak in the Monroe Special Collections Room in McKillop Library on Thursday, November 12, 2009, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The topic of her presentation will be Bowling Alone, Working Out Together: "Bodywork" and Community Building. A reception will follow her presentation.
O'Toole's primary areas of teaching and scholarly interest are the sociology of sex and gender, complex organizations, social stratification and inequality, the sociology of bodies, and work and occupations. She has also developed advanced seminars exploring gender relations in organizations and gender violence.
O'Toole, who joined Salve Regina University in July, holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in sociology from the University of Delaware and is a member of the Association for Integrative Studies, the Eastern Sociological Society, and Sociologists for Women in Society. She is the author of numerous scholarly articles and the co-author of three books, including "Social Problems" and two editions of the widely used "Gender Violence: Interdisciplinary Perspectives."
