FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome back to another new year! The library has undergone several space changes this summer and added some new services. Besides moving and expanding our Curriculum Resource Library and adding a café on the Main Floor, we have expanded wireless access throughout the building, added new databases and electronic resources, and increased staffing to better serve you. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss ways to continue to improve our research services.

CURRICULUM RESOURCE CENTER - A NEW HOME AND A NEW NAME

The Curriculum Resource Center has been re-located to the 2nd floor of the McKillop Library. The Center has an expanded reference/service desk area that will be staffed seven days a week! The new lay-out provides more space for group study and has doubled the Big Book display shelving to house the growing collection. New books acquired over the summer are out on display and we are processing new reading systems and more Jack Daws photo and reproduction document kits for history lessons.

On Thursday, October 7th, 2004, the Curriculum Resource Center will be re-named the Janet L. Robinson Curriculum Resource Center to honor this distinguished Salve Alumni. Robinson graduated cum laude from Salve Regina in 1972 and was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from her alma mater in 1998. She is the president and general manager of The New York Times, and vice president of Newspaper Operations, The New York Times Co. She delivered the keynote address during the university's 53rd Commencement on Sunday, May 18, 2003.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE CIRCULATION DEPARTMENT?

The McKillop Library has undergone several changes this past summer. As a result of the move of the Curriculum Library from the third floor to the second, we also shifted a great deal of books in our main collection. When shifting these books we took into consideration the arrangement that we thought would best serve our students. For example, previously the books dealing with the Social Sciences were split up between the second and third floor. Now, all the Social Sciences are together on the third floor. Due to the volume of books that needed to be shifted, we have not fully completed all of this shifting. Consequently, our patrons may notice several shelves that are empty as we continue our shift. We ask that if our patrons need any help in finding a book please do not hesitate to ask for help. We have phones on the second and third floors that automatically connect to the Circulation Desk on the first floor if you are in need of any assistance. In addition, we have increased our staff presence on the second floor and these staff persons can assist you if you need them. Information on all Circulation Department services can be found online.

Our very popular DVD video collection has grown over the summer and we invite all to visit the library and check one out.

LET US BRING THE LIBRARY TO YOU!

The library staff introduces a new service for faculty and staff. Did you know that we have a growing collection of DVDs that you can check out? Did you know that we now order all of the New York Times bestsellers? Speaking of the New York Times, did you know that you can access every issue of the NYT back to 1851 online? Have you wondered if there are new databases that may be available in your subject area? Or do you have one to suggest? Let's get together! Library staff would welcome the opportunity to meet with you one-on-one and talk about the library and what's in it for you. We will come to your office or you could come here. Picture this -- The library staff member will bring a wireless laptop into our new BookEnds Café and together we can chat about all the resources and services available to you over a wonderful cup of Green Mountain coffee! Let us show you what's new and answer your questions. The Reference Desk number is 341-2289. Give us a call to arrange a convenient time!

Don't forget about the online librarians! There is a virtual reference desk available to all Sunday through Thursday from 3:00pm to 10:00pm. If you cannot make it to the library but need some extra help, simply click on the Ask Helin link found on the library's homepage and a librarian will assist you with your research.
